The Umm Al Quwain Free Trade Zone (UAQ FTZ) was created under a Ruler's Decree and commenced operations in 1987, making it one of the UAE's longest-running free zones. It has built its reputation on being cost-efficient and fast to set up — a practical base for SMEs, traders, consultants, light-industrial operators and freelancers who want a UAE free-zone licence without the overheads of the larger financial centres.

UAQ FTZ offers 100% foreign ownership and a streamlined process across four licence types — Commercial, Consultancy / Service, Industrial and a Freelancer permit — with facilities ranging from business-centre desks and offices to warehouses, land plots and retail space. Why UAQ Free Zone

UAQ FTZ competes on value and speed rather than prestige. For founders who want a legitimate UAE free-zone licence, 100% ownership and a quick, low-overhead set-up, it is one of the most practical options in the country.

Cost-Efficient Base

UAQ FTZ is positioned as one of the UAE's most affordable free zones — a lower-overhead route to a UAE licence and the residence visas that come with it, popular with SMEs and first-time founders.

Established Since 1987

Operating under a Ruler's Decree since 1987, UAQ FTZ is one of the UAE's longest-running free zones — established infrastructure and a track record, not a new launch.

Well-Connected Location

Legal Structures Under UAQ Free Zone

UAQ FTZ recognises the standard UAE free-zone legal forms — the right one depends on shareholder count and whether you're incorporating fresh or extending an existing entity.

01

Free Zone Establishment (FZE)

A limited-liability entity with a single shareholder (individual or corporate) — the default for a solo founder or wholly-owned subsidiary.

02

Free Zone Company (FZC / FZ-LLC)

A limited-liability entity with two or more shareholders — used for joint ventures and multi-owner businesses.

03

Branch of a Company

A branch of an existing UAE or foreign company, operating under the parent's name and balance sheet — no separate share capital required.

04

Freelancer

A solo professional operating under their own name on a freelancer permit — the lowest-overhead route to a UAQ FTZ presence.

Tax & Compliance Position — UAQ Free Zone

UAQ FTZ entities are subject to UAE Federal Corporate Tax and can qualify for the 0% QFZP rate. VAT applies in the standard way; goods-handling businesses should confirm the area's Designated-Zone status.

UAE Corporate Tax

9% Headline · 0% QFZP on Qualifying Income

UAQ FTZ entities follow UAE Federal Corporate Tax under Decree-Law 47/2022 — 9% on taxable income above AED 375,000. Most can elect the Qualifying Free Zone Person (QFZP) regime and pay 0% on Qualifying Income; many small UAQ businesses also fall within Small Business Relief.

QFZP eligibilityQFZP eligibility requires Qualifying Income, adequate Free Zone substance, arm's-length transfer pricing and audited financials. Entities below the revenue threshold may instead elect Small Business Relief — we assess the better route per business.
UAE VAT

5% Standard Rate · Standard VAT Regime

UAQ FTZ entities follow standard UAE VAT — 5% on taxable supplies, AED 375,000 mandatory registration threshold, with input-tax recovery on business costs.

Designated Zone status: verify with FTAVAT Designated-Zone status under Cabinet 59/2017 should be confirmed for the specific UAQ FTZ area if the business moves physical goods. For services and consultancy businesses it is generally not the deciding factor.

What is UAQ FTZ?
The Umm Al Quwain Free Trade Zone (UAQ FTZ) is the free zone of the Umm Al Quwain emirate. Created under a Ruler's Decree, it commenced operations in 1987, making it one of the UAE's longest-running free zones. It is known for cost-efficient, fast-track company formation for SMEs, traders, consultants and freelancers.
What licence types does UAQ FTZ offer?
Four core types: Commercial / trading (buying and selling goods within and outside the UAE), Consultancy / service (professional advisory), Industrial (manufacturing, processing and assembly), and a Freelancer permit for solo professionals.
Can a foreign founder own 100% of a UAQ FTZ company?
Yes — as a free zone, UAQ FTZ permits full foreign ownership with no UAE-national shareholder requirement.
Why choose UAQ FTZ over a Dubai free zone?
Cost and speed. UAQ FTZ is one of the UAE's most affordable free zones with a fast, streamlined set-up — attractive for SMEs, traders, consultants and freelancers who don't need a Dubai address. If your customers, banking or sector specifically require a Dubai or financial-centre presence, we'll say so; otherwise UAQ FTZ is often the more practical route.
Does a UAQ FTZ company get UAE residence visas?

Does UAQ FTZ qualify for the 0% UAE Corporate Tax rate?
UAQ FTZ is a UAE free zone for Corporate Tax purposes. The 0% rate applies to qualifying income earned by a Qualifying Free Zone Person under the FTA's regime; non-qualifying income is taxed at 9%. Many smaller UAQ businesses also qualify for Small Business Relief — we assess the better route at the planning stage.
How quickly can a UAQ FTZ company be set up?
UAQ FTZ markets fast-track issuance, and straightforward set-ups can be completed quickly once the documents and name approval are in place. The exact timeline depends on the activity, licence type and visa requirements.
